Herpin was 90 years old when the doctors came to his home in New York. They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never saw Herpin sleeping. In fact, he did not even own a bed. He never needed one.
The only rest that Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers. The doctors were puzzled by this strang continuous sleeplessness. They asked him many questions, hoping to find an answer. They found only one answer that might explain his condition. Passage TWO
We arrived in Spain for the first time a few weeks ago and I decided to buy a car because we had sold the one we had in England before leaving. Yesterday the sales office rang us to say the car was ready. I had tried out a model like it before. But as I was not yet used to driving in this city my wife did not want me to collect it on my own. So we went together to fetch it. We paid for the car. They told us that there was enough petrol to take us to a garage, where we could fill up. The nearest garage to the office was about l00 yards away and we got there safely. But when I turned into the main road I suddenly saw a lot of cars facing towards me. I got out of their way as fast as I could by backing into the garage once more and the man behind me shouted at me:" It's such a problem to remember to drive on the right, isn't it?" my wife said. "Yes, if only I had had a few lessons for practice," I replied. "You'd be sorry if you had an accident on the first day, wouldn't you?" While we were talking, the man behind got out of his car and said in good English, "Would you mind telling me when you are thinking of leaving? Or are you going to sit in your car all the day?"
