11、When a man and a woman get married, it is one of the biggest decisions they will make in life. A man may select a woman because he, in his own eyes, sees her as the just-right wife for him. Every man has his own definition of what the "just-right" wife is. For example, the rich man and the poor man both may define their just-right wife according to her physical qualities.
A rich man may describe his "just-right"wife as charming, beautiful, wise and well developed. On the other hand, a poor man may define his "just-right" wife as pleasing, attractive, smart and shapely. Both men describe their just-right wife by the same physical qualities but use different words.
Although some men define the just-right wife by her physical qualities, other men describe their just-right wife by her other qualities. For example, the outdoor man may define his just-right wife as a woman who love to fish, to camp, and to hunt, while the inside sportsman may define his just-right wife as a woman who enjoys watching football, basketball and tennis. Both of these define their just-right wife by her sports qualities but in two different ways.
Men from all countries also have their definition of the just-right wife. For example, the Italian man describes his woman who stands six feet one inch tall with golden hair and blue eyes. On the other hand, the French man may describe his ideal woman as a woman who stands only five feet three inches with brown hair and green eyes.

12、I began to smoke when I was in high school. My parents didn't care much. They both smoked, and my older brother did, too. In school, the teachers talked against smoking, but the cigarette advertisements were so exciting. The men in the ads were so good-looking and so successful, and the women were well, they were beautiful and sophisticated.
I read a book called how to stop smoking. The writer said that smoking wastes time, and that cigarettes cost a lot of money. Ten years later, everyone began to hear about the negative effects of cigarette smoke: lung disease, cancer, and heart problems. After that, there was a health warning on every pack of cigarettes.
Then two events made me think of giving up smoking. First, I started to cough. I thought it was just a cold, but it didn't get better. Second, my brother got lung cancer. He got sicker and sicker. My brother and I used to smoke cigarettes together over twenty years, and we smoked our last cigarettes together the day before he died. I sat with him in his hospital room, and I decided to quit. "NO more cigarettes, ever." I said to myself.
However, it was very hard to stop. I tried several times to quit on my own--without success. Finally, I ran out of excuses--I might say my excuses went up in smoke. I joined the " Stop Smoking" program at the local hospital, which also ended up in failure.

13、The small black ants that we see running back and forth in the grass are the same ants that bother us by coming to our picnics uninvited. They are not trying to make pests of themselves, but are only doing the house-keeping job they were made for. They are nature's clean-up crew.
One of these ants, scouting(搜索)in the grass, finds the trail of an injured beetle. In some mysterious way, the ant lets other ants know it. Soon there are two ants, then a few more. Then a dozen or more are running around the beetle(甲虫). Enough ants will come to put an end to it.
When the beetle is dead, the ants carry it away to their underground nests. The efficient ants leave nothing in the grass but an empty shell.

14、Every day our world becomes smaller and smaller. Modern life changes so quickly. Today, planes fly across the oceans very fast; for example, it is possible to fly from London to New York in three and a half hours on a jet plane. Also we watch the Olympic Games and other international events on television at home through satellites. And all over the world, computers control many banking systems and industries. Computers also make communications between people easier and faster.
Other changes make the world smaller too. For instance, more people travel abroad today. Businessmen, tourists, students, scientists, political leaders, and film stars visit many countries each year. Students and scientists go to foreign universities and research institutes, and businessmen from international companies work in their branch offices abroad.
Styles of clothing are more and more universal, too. Australian stores sell shoes made in Spain and Italy. Young people in many countries all over the world buy American blue jeans. All these modern changes make our world a smaller place ---a kind of "global village".

15、My parents ran a small restaurant. The restaurant was open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And my first job when I was six years old was shining shoes for customers. My father made it clear that I had to meet certain standards and I had to be on time, hard working and polite to the customers. I was never paid for any work I did. One day I made a mistake of telling dad that I thought he should give me 10 pounds a week.
