26、The market is a concept. If you are growing potatoes for sale you are producing for the market. You might sell some to your neighbor and some to the manager of the local supermarket. In either case, you are producing for the market. Your efforts are being directed by the market. If people stop buying potatoes, you will stop producing them.
If your sister looks after a sick person to make money, she is also producing for the market. If your brother is a steelworker or a bus driver or a doctor, he is producing goods or services for the market.
When you spend your income, you are buying things from the market. You may spend money in stores, gas station and restaurants. Still you are buying from the market. When the local grocer hires you to drive the delivery lorry, he is buying your labor in the labor market.
The market may seem to be something abstract(抽象的). But for each person or business who is making or selling something, it's very real. If nobody buys your potatoes, it won't be long before you get the message. The market is telling you something. It's telling you that you are wasting energies and resources in doing something that market doesn't want you to do.

Turning to his daughter, he said: "Why should one of my legs be longer than the other one?" The daughter looked at her father's legs and said, "You have put on two odd shoes!"
When he heard this, the man was very happy and thought to himself: "What a bright daughter I've got!" Then he asked his daughter to go back to the house and got him another pair of shoes.
When the daughter went back to the house, all she could find was one shoe with thick sole and one with thin sole. Taking the shoes to show her father, she said, "It's no use changing! These shoes are also odd, one with a thick sole and one with a thin sole."

29、We are busy talking about and using the Internet, but how many of us know the history of the Internet?
Many people are surprised when they find that the Internet was set up in the 1960s. At that time, computers were large and expensive. Computer network didn't work well. If one computer in the network broke down, then the whole network stopped. So a new network system had to be set up. It should be good enough to be used by many different computers. If part of the network was not working, information could be sent through another part. In this way computer network system would keep on working on the time.
At first the Internet was only used by the government, but in the early 1970s,universities,hospitals and banks were allowed to use it too. However, computers were still very expensive and the Internet was difficult to use. By the start of the 1990s,computers became cheaper and easier to use. Scientists had also developed software that made “surfing”in the Internet more convenient.
Today it is easy to get on-line and it is said that millions of people use the Internet every day. Sending e-mail is more and more popular among students.

30、I've loved my mother's desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.
Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother,"But the desk, "she'd said again, "is for Elizabeth."
I never saw her angry, never saw her cry, I knew she loved me, she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.
They never happened and a gulfopened between us, I was "too emotional", but she lived "on the surface".
As years passed and I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me. I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came.
My hope turned to disappointment. Then little interest and, finally, peace.
It seemed that nothing happened. I couldn't be sure that the letter had even got to mother.
I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.
Now the present of her desk told me, as she'd never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside-a photo of my father and a one-page letter. Folded (折叠) and refolded many times.
Give me an answer, my letter asks. In any way you choose, mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.
