32、For some time, businessmen in America have used Ms before a woman's name when they do not know if the woman is married or not.
Today, however, many America women like to use Ms better than Mrs. and Miss. The word Mr. does not tell us if a man is married or not. Many women think this is an advantage for men. They want to be equal to men in this way. These women feel that it is not important for people to know if they are married or not.
There are some problems with Ms, however. Not all women like to use Ms. Some like the older ways of doing things. Some find it difficult to pronounce. But young women usually like it better than older ones do. Perhaps Ms will be used by more American women before long.

34、On a cold winter afternoon, I was walking home from a supermarket. I was feeling a little tired, as I was carrying me shopping bags. They were so heavy that I decided to stop to have a rest in the park. I walked towards the gate of the park. I noticed a poor man walking out of the restaurant in front of me. He was holding a paper bag. He walked to a nearby dustbin and started looking through it.
I suddenly felt sad. I knew this man would take all that he could get, so I went up to him and gave him some fruit. The man, with wrinkles on his face, looked up in surprise and took what I gave him.
A big smile appeared on his face and I felt very happy. Then he said, “Wow! First someone gave me this sandwich, then this drink, and now some delicious fruit.
This is my daughter's lucky day. Thank you, boy.” Then he went away, singing a song.
Just then, I understood what the saying “Giving is getting.” Really meant. Everyone in the world needs help, everyone can offer help and everyone will be helped by showing kindness. Giving sometimes doesn't cost much, but it means a lot to the people who you help.
The man's happiness at the moment comes into my mind every time I have the chance to help others.

35、When Jeff was young, he had always been thin and strong. Now Jeff was forty, and he was fat and very soft. He did not wish to get fatter and softer every year. One day one of his friends said to him, "Would you like to be thinner, Jeff?" "Of course I would," Jeff answered.
"Well, stop going to your office by car, and get a bicycle."
Jeff had not ridden a bicycle for many years. "It is very hard to learn to ride a bicycle again at your age," his wife said.
But it was not too hard for Jeff to do so. He bought a bicycle and practiced riding it every evening. He hoped that it would help him to get thinner, and he got a lot of pleasure from it.
He found little roads which were not really very narrow but were too narrow for cars, and there he got away from the noises of the city, which were becoming too much for him. They were not really very loud, but they were too loud for Jeff. Then he began to go to his office on his bicycle. Sometimes all the cars stopped at a red light, and he went past them to the front, because his bicycle was narrow. Then he was very happy.
