12、Our child's behavior is greatly influenced by the way we react to what he has done. Our reactions help to determine whether our child will repeat his behavior or whether he will do something different. This statement is a very important part of a principle of behavioral psychology.

The principle states that a behavior is influenced or affected by how the environment ---- people, places and things ---- immediately responds to the behavior. Perhaps without realizing it, you have used this principle many times.

On the occasion when you told your child what a good boy he was after he cleaned up his room, you used the principle. When you sent your child to his room for fighting with his brother, you used the principle. When I gave Kim a cookie after she started to cry, I used the principle. 13、China's former volleyball star Lang Ping has been invited to coach the US women's national team for the Beijing 2008 Olympics. But China's sports media said the offer would be difficult to accept. Lang, who is presently coaching a club team in Italy's professional volleyball league, told sina.com that she was considering the offer by the US Volleyball Association. "Right now I'm still considering their offer but I will answer them soon," Lang said. "If I don't take the job, I have to give them enough time to find someone else."

Lang, 45，won Olympic gold in 1984. She later coached the Chinese women to silver at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 1998 World Championships. She has also coached at New Mexico University in the United States where her daughter was born and lives.

14、Ruth Mckenney was born in 1911 in Mishawaka, India. She grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and at the age of fourteen she got her first job working nights in a printer's shop. She also worked as a waitress, but after dropping two fruit salads on the floor, she was fired（解雇）.

While Miss Mckenney was studying in an Ohio State University, she found an outside job as a reporter for the Columbus Dispatch. In fact, she left college before she got her degree in order to devote all her time to newspaper work. She later worked on papers in Akron, Ohio, and New York City.

In New York, Miss Mckenney began to write stories about the amusing experiences she shared with her sister. These were published in the New York magazine, and later in a book called “My Sister Eileen”. This book was an immediate bestseller, and soon became a hit play. Miss Mckenney has also written a guide to England and a number of serious books on American labor.

Miss Mckenney married Richard Bransten in 1937. They had one daughter. It came as no surprise when the author named her Eileen.

15、About three hundred words in the English language come from the names of people. Many of these words are technical words. When there is a new invention of discovery, a new word may be coined after the inventor or scientist.

It is interesting to observe how many common English words have found their way into the language from the names of people. Lord Sandwich who lived from 1718 to 1792 used to sit at the gambling table eating slices of bread with meat in between. As the Lord was the only one among his friends who ate bread in that way, his friends began to call the "bread" for fun. Later on the word became part of the English language.

The word "boycott" means to refuse to have anything to do with somebody or something. It comes from a man called Captain Boycott. He was a land agent in 1880 and he collected rents and taxes for an English landowner in Ireland. But the Captain was a very harshman. He treated his poor tenants very badly. His tenants decided not to speak to him at all. Eventually word got back to the landowner and the Captain was removed. The word "boycott" became popular and was used by everyone to mean the kind of treatment that was received by Captain Boycott.
