46、President Abraham Lincoln often visited hospitals to talk with wounded(受伤的)soldiers during the Civil War. Once, doctors pointed out a young soldier who was near death and Lincoln went over to his bedside.

"Is there anything I can do for you?" asked the President.

The soldier obviously didn't recognize Lincoln, and with some effort he was able to say in a low voice, "Would you please write a letter to my mother?"

A pen and paper were provided and the President carefully began writing down what the young man was able to say:"My dear mother, I was badly hurt while doing my duty. I'm afraid I'm not going to recover(痊愈). Don't grieve too much for me, please. Kiss Mary and John for me. May God bless you and father."

The soldier was too weak to continue, so Lincoln signed the letter for him and added, "Written for your son by Abraham Lincoln."

The young man asked to see the letter and was astonished when he discovered who had written it. "Are you really the President?"he asked.

"Yes, I am," Lincoln replied quietly. Then he asked if there was anything else he could do.

"Would you please hold my hand?" the soldier asked. "It will help to see me through the end."

In the quiet room, the tall President took the boy's hand in his and spoke warm words of encouragement until death came.

47、One summer, the library in Texas in the United States was having a terrible problem. It had grown too big for its building and had to move to a newly-built library across town. Everything was finished and paid for, the librarians(图书馆人员) found out that they hadn't left enough money to move their mountains of books across the town. Even the cheapest moving company was going to ask for several hundred thousand dollars to pack and move the books. What could they do? Finally one clever librarian had a bright idea. She said the move was going to take all summer and during that time, the library would be closed. Why not ask everyone to come in to borrow 20, 40, or 100 books? At the end of the summer they could return them-to the new library. The idea worked beautifully and not only did the library save a lot of money, but also people read a lot of books.

48、The clock struck eleven at night. The whole house was quiet. Everyone was in bed except me. Under the strong light, I looked sadly before me at a huge pile of that troublesome stuff(东西) they call "books".

I was going to have my examination the next day. "When can I go to bed?" I asked myself. I didn't answer. In fact, I dared not.

The clock struck twelve. "Oh, dear!" I cried. "Ten more books to read before I can go to bed!" We pupils are the most pity creatures in the world. Dad does not agree with me on this. He did not have to work so hard when he was a boy. The clock struck one. I was quite desperate (绝望的) now. I forgot all I had learned. I was too tired to go on. I did the only thing I could. I prayed, "Oh God, please help me pass the exam tomorrow. I do promise to work hard afterwards, Amen." My eyes were so heavy that I could hardly open them. 49、Before you go to another country it is a great help if you know the language and some of the customs of the country. When people meet each other for the first time in Britain, they say "How do you do?" and shake hands. Usually they do not shake hands when they just meet or say goodbye. But they shake hands after they haven't met for a long time or when they will be away from each other for a long time.

Last year a group of German students went to England for a holiday. Their teacher told them that the English people hardly shake hands. So when they met their English friends at the station, they kept their hands behind their backs. The English students had learned that the Germans shake hands as often as possible, so they put their hands in front and got ready to shake hands with them. It made both of them laugh.
