16、William Henry Harrison, the ninth president of the United States, was born in a small town. As a young boy, he was very quiet and shy. In fact, he was so quiet that many people thought he was stupid.

Because of that, the people of the town liked to play tricks（开玩笑） on this boy.

"Here, William," one of them would say. "Here is a nickel（五美分硬币）, and here is a dime（十美分硬币）. Which one do you want?"

William always chose the nickel, and all the people would laugh at him.

Finally, his mother took him aside and said to him, "I know that you are a smart boy, but sometimes you let people think you are not so smart. Why do you always choose the nickel instead of the dime? Don't you know that a dime is worth more than a nickel?"

17、Have you ever heard of the saying, "Never judge a book by its cover"? This is a good rule to follow when trying to judge the intelligence of others. Some people have minds that shine only in certain situations. A young man with an unusual gift in writing may find himself unable to say a single word in front of a pretty girl. When he speaks, he may not be able to find the right words. But don't make the mistake of thinking him stupid; with a pen and paper, he can express himself better than anybody else.

Other people may fool you into thinking highly of their intelligence by putting up a good front. A student who listens carefully and takes notes in class is found to make a favorable impression on his teachers. But when it comes to exams, he may score near the bottom of the class.

It all boils down to this: you can't judge someone by appearance. The only way to determine a person's intelligence is to get to know him or her. Then you can see how he or she deals with different situations. The more situations you see, the better your judgment is likely to be. So take your time. Don't judge the book by its cover.

19、When my first wartime Christmas came，I was in a new soldier school in Ashland and not sure if I could make it home for the holidays. On the afternoon of December 23 we were told some of us would have three-day holidays. I was one of the lucky soldiers.
