16、William Henry Harrison, the ninth president of the United States, was born in a small town. As a young boy, he was very quiet and shy. In fact, he was so quiet that many people thought he was stupid.

Because of that, the people of the town liked to play tricks(开玩笑) on this boy.

"Here, William," one of them would say. "Here is a nickel(五美分硬币), and here is a dime(十美分硬币). Which one do you want?"

William always chose the nickel, and all the people would laugh at him.

Finally, his mother took him aside and said to him, "I know that you are a smart boy, but sometimes you let people think you are not so smart. Why do you always choose the nickel instead of the dime? Don't you know that a dime is worth more than a nickel?"

"Certainly I know it," William answered slowly, "but if I choose the dime, then people won't play the trick on me anymore. Then I won't get any more nickels."

17、Have you ever heard of the saying, "Never judge a book by its cover"? This is a good rule to follow when trying to judge the intelligence of others. Some people have minds that shine only in certain situations. A young man with an unusual gift in writing may find himself unable to say a single word in front of a pretty girl. When he speaks, he may not be able to find the right words. But don't make the mistake of thinking him stupid; with a pen and paper, he can express himself better than anybody else.

Other people may fool you into thinking highly of their intelligence by putting up a good front. A student who listens carefully and takes notes in class is found to make a favorable impression on his teachers. But when it comes to exams, he may score near the bottom of the class.

It all boils down to this: you can't judge someone by appearance. The only way to determine a person's intelligence is to get to know him or her. Then you can see how he or she deals with different situations. The more situations you see, the better your judgment is likely to be. So take your time. Don't judge the book by its cover.

Soon an old man came along with his cow. "Who put this stone in the center of the road?" said the old man, but he did not try to remove the stone. Instead, with some difficulty he passed around the stone and continued on his way. Another man came along and did the same thing; then another came, and another. All of them complained(抱怨)about the stone in the center of the road, but not one of them tried to remove(移开)it. Late in the afternoon, a young man came along. 19、When my first wartime Christmas came,I was in a new soldier school in Ashland and not sure if I could make it home for the holidays. On the afternoon of December 23 we were told some of us would have three-day holidays. I was one of the lucky soldiers.

It was Christmas Eve when I arrived, and a light snow had fallen. Mother opened the front door. I could see over her into the corner of the living-room where the tree had always stood. There were lights, all colours, shining in the green of the tree.

"Where did it come from?" I asked.

"I asked the gate boy to cut it," my mother said, "I wouldn't have had one just for myself, but when called... Oh! Such a rush! He just brought it in this afternoon..."

The tree was almost as tall as the room, and the Tree Top Star was in its place. A few branches reached about a little disorderly (不规则的) at the side, I thought, and there was a big bare (光秃的) branch showing in the middle. But the tree filled the room with the pleasant smell of Christmas.

"It's not like the one you want to find," my mother went on. "Yours were always in good shape. I think the gate boy didn't know where to look for a better one." "Don't worry," I told her. "It's perfect."

It wasn't,of course, but at the moment I understood for the first time: all Christmas trees are perfect.

20、Students often want to practise their English outside class. One of the best ways of practicing your English is to speak to foreigners. Most of the students ask, “Is it OK to talk to foreigners when we meet them in the street?” The answer is yes or no, but probably no! If you see a foreigner who looks lost, it is polite to ask him or her, “May I help you?” But if not, you should probably let him or her go on with the business. That is, you can talk to a foreigner at some time or places. It is quite OK to ask him or her questions if a foreigner comes into your school, classroom or your teachers' office. It's also OK to talk to foreigners in some public places. If you see a foreigner and there is no other one with him or her in a restaurant, a waiting room, or a shop, it is the right time for you to ask him or her, “Is this seat free?” or questions like this. You can probably help them if they are new to China, And if they are alone, you may be able to make them feel more welcome. It's a pleasure to talk to a foreigner if you choose the right time and place.
